When we first started watching Fullmetal Achemist, we thought it was a cute show and liked the relationship between Ed and Al. It had a long and complex storyline that had a lot of twists and turns along the way. However, looking back after having finished watching the entire series, we can't say it's one of our favorites.
What was Fullmetal Alchemist about?
Fullmetal Alchemist was about two brothers and their journey to make themselves whole again. When they tried to bring their mother back to life using alchemy, Ed lost his arm and leg and his brother Al lost his whole body. Ed saved his life by attaching his soul to a suit of armor, and the two of them would stop at nothing to make things right again. Along the way they learned the secrets of the Philosopher's Stone and make some choices that would affect their future and test their brotherly bond.
What was the best part about the show?
The best part about the show was that it was about two brothers and their relationship with one another. Most shows have a lead male and lead female that fall in love and that is just so boring. It's been done a million times and it was really nice to see a show without a love story as a main part of the show. There were romances but they were between minor characters and main story was about Ed and Al.
What was the worst part about the show?
The Homunculi were pretty annoying and a lot of the storylines in the second half of the show dragged on too long. To be honest, we really don't remember much about the storyline details of the show even though we made it through the whole thing and watched the movie. We know that the show is insanely popular with a lot of people, but it is not one of our favorites.
Where did the show go wrong?
The end was a little weird with Ed ending up in our world. The last scenes with Ed and Al wishing to be together again were adorable, but including the real world in the show ruined the fantasy aspect of the anime for us. It probably went wrong for us when the focus went towards the Homunculi and Ed and Al's father.
What is our favorite/most memorable scene?
Hughes talking about his daughter and showing off her pictures all of the time, the episode when Ed and Al were remembering training with Izumi on the island, Al's problems with his armor, Ed and Mustang's rivalry, and Ed's tirades in the early episodes of the show.
Who are our favorite characters and why?
Ed, Al, and Hughes. Ed was cute because he was so protective of his brother and determined to make things right for him. Al was a good character and was adorable. It was strange having a kids voice come out of a huge suit of armor, but it worked. Hughes was a fun character and his death was detrimental to our enjoyment of the show.
