What was Ouran High School Host Club about?
Ouran is about a host club in a prestigious high school in Japan, where all the rich boys and girls have way too much time on their hands. It follows Haruhi, a female scholarship student, who is forced to join the host club after she breaks an expensive vase. The catch is that she has to pose as a boy to be a member of the host club, which leads to all sorts of wacky hijinks as the other club members struggle to keep her gender a secret.
What was the best part about the show?
The members of the host club are all interesting and well developed. While the show may seem like a fluffy comedy at first, some of the storylines do run deeper than that, and many of the characters really grow throughout the series (and even more in the manga). There are also a lot of great characters in the supporting cast who add a lot to the show. We think that the English voice actors were cast perfectly for all of the roles, and that made the show even more enjoyable to watch.
What was the worst part about the show?
Not something that's wrong with the show per se, but we wish that it had followed the manga a bit more closely. There is so much more that happens in the manga after the show was created, and it's kind of a shame that the show had to end before it got to all of that.
Where did the show go wrong?
As with most of the other anime we've seen, there really isn't a single point where the show goes wrong because it is so thought out before the show even starts.
What is our favorite/most memorable scene?
Most of Tamaki's scenes including, but not limited to, when he finally figures out that Haruhi is a girl, when he finally figures out that he isn't Haruhi's father, when he pretends to be Haruhi for her medical exam, when he rolls the ball and does his puppy dog eyes, the flashback to when he wants Kyoya to get a kotatsu table, and the entire "Tamaki's Unwitting Depression" episode. Some of our other favorites are Renge's host club movie, when the host club meets Haruhi's dad, all the scenes with the Lobelia girls, the twins' antics, Casanoda wanting to play kick the can, Kirimi being scared of her brother, and the refreshing competition in Karuizawa.
Who are our favorite characters and why?
Tamaki, Kyoya, Kauru, and Hikaru. Tamaki is always entertaining and it is surprising how layered his character is. He has a way of making his depressed and emotional scenes much more amusing than what they should be. He worked his hardest to keep the host club together and had an interesting connection with every one of the members. Kyoya is always so serious and put together in relation to all of the other host club members, so it is even funnier when he loses his cool. He is very calculating in everything he does and is just a cool character. Kyoya and Tamaki are such contrasting characters, but their friendship somehow works (who else would play mommy and daddy to the host club?). Hikaru and Kauru, the twins that speak in unison, had one of the most interesting journeys in the show and their relationship was really sweet together. They had to learn how to grow up and apart from one another while still maintaining their unbreakable bond.
