"You make me feel right, David." - Patrick
David Rose and Patrick Brewer are an absolute gem of a couple from an absolute gem of a show: "Schitt's Creek". The show starts as David and his exremely wealthy family lose everything except for the deed to a town called Schitt's Creek that they bought as a joke years ago. They're forced to live in adjacent rooms at the only run down motel in town and make due with the new life they were forced into, which is quite an adjustment. David, like the rest of his family, does not fit in, but when the general store in town closes, he sees it as an opportunity to prove that he can succeed in something on his own without the financial backing and well meaning underhanded schemes of his parents. When he goes to apply for a business license, he meets Patrick, and while they don't necessarily start on the best foot, Patrick is intrigued right away by both David's store idea and David himself. They decide to become business partners, and with David's eye and Patrick's business know how, they open the Rose Apothecary, a high end boutique featuring locally sourced products.
David and Patrick's romantic relationship blossomed not long after opening the store, and the two became partners in every sense of the word. The greatest thing about their relationship is how much enjoyment they get out of each other. They have very different personalities, but they get each other. They play with each other and tease each other good naturedly - Patrick knows how to push David and vice versa, but they also know to back off when it's not funny anymore. They talk about things (a novel concept) and don't let anything fester between them. Even when David got upset with Patrick for not telling him about his ex-fiance, and then Patrick got upset with David for making him think that they were breaking up over it, they talked it through and both made lovely gestures to let the other know how much they meant to them.
The phrase missing puzzle piece may be trite and overused, but it perfectly describes David and Patrick's relationship. David is a difficult person to like, let alone love, but Patrick saw past all of his quirks and dramatics and helped him realize that he wasn't damaged goods, he's a person deserving of love. Patrick was in the closet when he met David, and David helped him to feel right in his own skin and be proud of who he is, while also owning up to his own dramatic outbursts. They fit together perfectly and are a solid pair both as business and life partners. I'm usually waiting for the other shoe to drop when things are going well for a couple that I like, but David and Patrick are different. The conflict that they face is not related to the solidity of their relationship, but rather navigating the day to day of being in a growing relationship and reaching each new milestone together. They are simply the best, and seeing their love story unfold from the very beginning has been an absolute privilege and a joy to watch.
Quotes
3x13: Grad Night
[David kisses Patrick]
Patrick: "Thank you."
David: "For what?"
Patrick: "I've never done that before...with a guy."
David: "Okay."
Patrick: "Yeah, and I was getting a little scared that I was gonna let you leave here without us having done that. So thank you for...making that happen for us."
David: "Well, fortunately I am a very generous person, so..."
Patrick: "Can we talk tomorrow?"
David: "We can talk whenever you'd like, just preferably not before 10 am cause I'm not really a morning person."
Patrick: "Goodnight David"
David: "Goodnight Patrick."
4x01: Dead Guy in Room 4
Patrick: "You know, when you kissed me...that felt like my first time. All the things that you're supposed to feel, I felt them last night."
David: "Well, if we're being honest with each other, this is sort of like my first time too. I mean, it's not, I've kissed like a thousand people, but...nobody that I...cared about, or...respected...or...thought was nice. So, in a way, it's like we're both starting something new."
Patrick: "Thank you, David. And, hey, for the record I also respect you and think that you're a good person."
David: "It's just I said, 'nice person'"
Patrick: "I know."
[They kiss]
David: "I just need you to say, 'nice person'."
Patrick: "You're a good person."
David: "That's not 'nice'."
4x07: The Barbecue
David: "You stood in front of me and told me to trust people."
Patrick: "I know."
David: "When I was perfectly fine not trusting people. Not trusting people is what I'm used to. It is my comfort zone, but next thing I know there's an oversized cookie on my doorstep, and you are telling me that I have nothing to worry about."
Patrick: "I didn't want it to affect what we have, okay? And I mean it when I tell you that you have nothing to worry about. Cause no matter how hard I tried with her, it just never felt right. And up until recently I didn't understand why. David, I've spent most of my life not knowing what right was supposed to feel like, and then I met you, and everything changed. You make me feel right, David."
David: "That is quite possibly one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard anyone say. Outside of the Downton Christmas Special."
Patrick: "It's the truth."
4x09: The Olive Branch
Patrick: "I think this is gonna take a minute to get used to."
David: "I don't want to get used to this! I don't wanna pretend like we're co-workers."
Patrick: "We are co-workers."
David: "Okay, I just liked it better when we were more than that."
Patrick: "David, I'm just trying to go off of what you wanted."
David: "You wouldn't let me finish telling you what I wanted! I was ready to get back together days ago!"
Patrick: "What?"
David: "Yes."
Patrick: "Then why didn't we?"
David: "I've never been in this situation before where someone's been so nice...to me. And generous."
Patrick: "I'm sorry, were you holding back on talking to me because you were getting gifts?"
David: "I was very upset and confused. So upset, that I barely finished the chocolates."
Patrick: "David, this wasn't meant to be some Advent calendar of apologies, it was like an olive branch to get you to talk to me."
David: "I just, I guess, didn't know how many olive branches you were planning on extending."
Patrick: "Ideally, one."
David: "Okay, well, now I know."
Patrick: "Yeah, and now I know that, while I was torturing myself, you were sitting at home just opening gifts. I see you like the bracelet."
David: "I love the bracelet, thank you. Does this mean that we...are back...?"
Patrick: "You know what? I feel like now maybe I deserve an olive branch or two."
David: "Okay, I understand that. What if...I gave you back some of the olive branches that you gave to me? I was lying about the chocolates, I ate them all, but I'm sure there are some flowers that are still alive."
Patrick: "You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna go to lunch, and you're gonna sit here and think about what you've done, okay?"
David: "Okay. While you're at lunch, can you get me some lunch?"
Patrick: "Unbelievable."
4x12: Singles Week
Patrick: "What you're doing is very brave, very generous, okay? And I don't wanna add more stress to your day, but I love you."
David: "Okay, so...so you just said that to me for the first time, knowing that it would make my day more stressful."
Patrick: "That's correct."
David: "Because you know that I've never said that to anyone else, aside from my parents twice, and one time at a..."
Patrick: "At a Mariah Carey concert, I know. And I don't expect you to say it back to me right now, you say it when you're ready. Just felt right to me in the moment. You're my Mariah Carey."
David: "Okay, that compliment could bring me to tears, but I'm not gonna let it. So...I...would like to thank you for all the wonderful things that you said."
David: "I love you."
Patrick: "I know I'll never be able to compete with Mariah. This just kind of feels like one of those perfect moments that you dream about. Except in my dream, I'm holding a nice cup of tea."
David: "Oh f*ck!"
Patrick: "I'm kidding, I don't need the tea."
David: "No, I am making this perfect moment, perfect."
5x11: Meet the Parents
David: "It was just a very messy day, and I was trying to detangle things, and just make everything okay."
Patrick: "Yeah, well, you made everything okay."
5x13: The Hike
Patrick: "So I used to come on this hike a lot, when I first moved here, and I was developing feelings for this guy I had just gotten into business with, and I didn't know what to do about it because I didn't know if that guy had the same feelings, or if I'd ever be able to muster up the courage to let him know how I felt. And now, here he is, the love of my life, standing in front of me, and this just felt like the perfect place to ask you to marry me."
David: "Are you sure?"
Patrick: "Easiest decision of my life."
5x14: Life is a Cabaret
David: "I met someone who changed my life, and I don't know where I'd be without him."
