Fry was a pizza delivery boy back in the year 1999.  On New Years Eve, he was sent to deliver a pizza to a lab - only to discover that it was a prank call.  Certain that the year 2000 was going to be just as crummy as every other year, Fry kicked back in the lab to drink a beer.  When Fry's chair tipped over backwards he fell into a containment chamber and was cryogenically frozen for 1000 years.  He awoke on New Years Day in the year 3000, unaware of how much time had actually passed.  Since there was really nothing left for him in the past (or so he thought), Fry decided to make the best of his new chance to start over. 


       Leela grew up in an orphanarium, always feeling different from the other kids (perhaps it was the fact that she only had one eye), and she thought that her parents were aliens who abandoned her on Earth.  In actuality, her parents were mutants from the sewers of New York who left her to the surface to give her a better chance at life.  When she grew up, she had a job assigning job chips to people.  She put Fry through the assignment tests once he woke up and was to install a job chip into his hand marking him as a delivery boy forever.  Fry ran off and she had to chase him down to complete her assignment.  Leela took out her job chip and became Fry's friend when the two of them realized that they hated their jobs.


       Fry and Leela (along with a robot named Bender) found Fry's distant nephew Professor Farnsworth, who gave them jobs at his delivery company "Planet Express".  Leela became the pilot and Bender and Fry became delivery boys.  Throughout the show, Fry's advances were always rejected by Leela, because she found him to be too immature.  His feelings for her were never a secret, and while she found his childlike-ness endearing, she didn't think that they would work as a couple.


       Even though Leela always turned Fry down, he never gave up hope that they would end up together.  He was always jealous when she went out with other guys and wanted to prove to her that he could be the man she wanted.  When Fry got parasites, he was finally able to articulate his feelings for Leela and she found herself falling for his new self.  Fry was so happy that Leela liked him, but got rid of the parasites to see if it was the real him that she was falling for.  When she was stung by a killer bee and in a coma in the hospital, Fry stayed by her bed constantly and made sure that she came out of it alive.  Fry was always there for Leela no matter how she treated him, and she began to take more notice of this as the series went on.  Fry even got Leela to marry him by moving the stars for her, though it ended in divorce.


       Fry finally won Leela's heart in the last episode, when he wrote an opera dedicated to her.  Even after he lost the devil's hands that allowed him to play the holophoner well, Leela stayed to hear the ending, which showed the two of them kissing and then walking off together, hand in hand.

       Since "Futurama" came back in the form of movies set after the series ended, Fry and Leela's future was once again up in the air.  While the end of the series showed a hopeful future for the two, the first movie did not have Fry and Leela together.  In fact, Leela was ready to marry another guy!  Since Lars was in fact Fry, and Leela said that he was the only man she would ever love, there was much hope for Fry and Leela to still get together in the future.  We were right, because in the end of the fourth movie, both Fry and Leela professed their love for each other and seemed to really mean it this time! Since new episodes of the show are currently being produced, we'll just have to wait to see if Fry and Leela's love declarations will hold true in the future.

This quote was said in the end of the episode "The Sting".  Leela had been stung by a space bee and was in a coma.  Fry stayed by her side until she woke up and tried to bring her back by talking to her.  Leela in her mind, however, thought that Fry had died after the bee sting and that she was going crazy.

Fry: "I don't know if you can hear me Leela, but there's something I want to tell you... I love you."

Leela: "I'm so scared Fry; I don't know what to do!"

Fry: "Just wake up Leela, please, just wake up... "

Leela: "I don't understand what you mean!"

Fry: Just wake up, please, just wake up Leela (cries)."
