"If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?" - RuPaul
RuPaul's Drag Race started in 2009 and is a reality show competition to crown the next drag superstar. Each week the contestants compete in challenges and try to impress on the runway, with the bottom queens facing off against each other in a 'lipsync for your life' to determine who leaves the competition. We have been fans of RuPaul's Drag Race since season 1, when we decided to watch it after we heard that Lucy Lawless was going to be a guest judge on one of the episodes. Little did we know that she would have such a small part and that we would become completely addicted to this show!
We never knew much about drag culture or RuPaul herself before this show, and it has been a lot of fun being fans of this show and the queens. RuPaul is a great host and has some great advice for the contestants and fans alike, such as learning to love yourself, overcoming your inner saboteur, and learning that what anyone else thinks of you is none of your business. And although it is a reality show and competition, one thing that the show never does it take itself too seriously.
Each season there is usually a lot to enjoy with the unique challenges and talented contestants. There have been challenges where the girls have to make costumes out of paper money, wigs, dollar store items, curtains, and Christmas decorations. It is really fun to see their creativity shine through, and we also like getting to see their unique talents such as when they have comedy, singing, or dancing challenges. We especially like to see the friendships between the contestants, so one thing that gets old is when there is too much focus on the drama between certain people. Season 5 is my least favorite season (aside from season 7 which is the common opinion) because the Coco/Alyssa and Roxxxy/Jinx storylines were just dragged on so long. I personally enjoy the scenes when they show the queens working together, which is why I really didn't mind the team aspect of All Stars 1.
Many of the queens are just so likeable and it has been fun keeping up with them and their careers outside of the competition. There are several series to follow on the WOWPresents YouTube channel, a lot of the queens have out singles and albums, Bianca has had a comedy special and movie, and there are also tons of videos on their own individual channels. That's all in addition to seeing them on Drag-U, RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars, and appearances in later seasons of Drag Race.
There is just something about this show that is so addicting and rewatchable. Whenever we go on vacation we seem to always bring several DVD's with us to watch, and no matter what other shows we bring we almost always just watch Drag Race. It is also very quotable and we often find ourselves repeating many of the memorable lines in every day life. One we like to quote when someone is being dramatic is Latrice's "Five G's" (Good God Get a Grip Girl). We named two of our guinea pigs after queens on the show (Tatiana and Bianca), and we like to go up to our Tatiana and ask her what the T is.
Even after Drag Race has been on for so many seasons, there is still something new and fresh each season to enjoy. We look forward to the next seasons and spin-offs and thank the show for introducing us to the careers of several awesome queens!
