Rockstar was a competition to find the new lead singer of a band. We caught the top 6 episode of Rockstar: INXS and were hooked instantly.  It was really the antithesis of American Idol, and it's a shame that it didn't last for more than two seasons.

What was Rockstar about?

Rockstar: INXS was the first season of the show and it was about finding the new lead singer for the existing band INXS.  It was similar to American Idol in that the competitors performed cover songs each week and there was a weekly elimination.  However, it was more grown up and it was a much more enjoyable show in our opinion.  The second season was different because the premise was to find the lead singer of a new band called Supernova.  It didn't quite work as well, but it was still enjoyable to watch.


What was the best part about the show?

It was just a fun show to watch.  The judging was more relaxed and since the judges were the band members, they were much more invested in the final outcome of the competition.  The contestants were older then those on American Idol (the youngest allowed was 21 years old), and it really made a difference in the quality of the performances.  They were also encouraged to arrange their own songs, they could play instruments from the beginning, we didn't have to go through audition episodes, and they were even tasked with writing and performing their own original songs.  Another cool thing was that every week there was a behind the scenes episode showing the week leading up to their next performances.


What was the worst part about the show?

Just because the contestants were older didn't mean that there was no drama happening backstage.  It really spoiled some of the behind the scenes episodes, and was especially annoying in season 2.


Where did the show go wrong?

Although for the most part we enjoyed season 2, we think that they should have found another existing band looking for a new singer.  It didn't make much sense to create a new band that wasn't going to last long anyway without giving the contestants much to go off of with regards to the style of the band they were competing to front. 


What is our favorite/most memorable scene?

JD winning the first season was so adorable, the "Stop Go!" songwriting challenge that also gave rise to "Pretty Vegas", Marty's performances of "Trees", "Hit Me Baby", and "Creep", Lukas' lack of an attention span all throughout season 2, Lukas singing "Creep", and when JD sang "Pretty Vegas" for the first time on stage.


Who are our favorite contestants and why?

JD Fortune, Marty Casey, and Lukas Rossi, so we had a pretty good track record for liking the front runners each season!  JD was adorable, and despite his issues with the other contestants, we rooted for him and enjoyed all of his performances.  He really was right for INXS.  Marty was probably the most consistent performer and had some really memorable performances.  Lukas was always entertaining and we really like his original music outside of Rockstar: Supernova.
